Inauguration Ceremony of the 21st KIGAM President

 

 

Dr. Pyeong-Koo Lee was appointed as the 21st President of Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) on December 23, 2021.

 

Dr. Lee has been a dedicated and important member of KIGAM since 1985. He served as the Executive Director of the Geologic Environment Division (2011~2013) and the Executive Director of the Planning & Coordination Division (2008~2010) at KIGAM. He also worked as the Head of the Natural Disaster Mitigation Technology Development Group at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA, 2004~2010), and the Head of the Natural Disaster Prevention Technology Development Project at the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST, 2003~2004).

 

In particular, Dr. Lee was specially recognized for his achievement of developing a technology for tracking fine dust in heavy metal contamination and its influences in relation to human absorption and pollutant factors for the first time in the world. In particular, this technology identifies air pollutants containing chromium 6, which is a known class 1 carcinogen, influences our health.

 

With his great findings from this research, the Korean President, Mr. Moon Jae-In awarded him with the Order of Science and Technology Innovation Medal ‘Second Class’ in 2020 to recognize his efforts in producing this remarkable achievement.

 

As for his educational background, he has a B.Sc. in Geology, a M.Sc in Applied Mineralogy from Korea University, and a Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the University of Orléans, France.

 

The newly inaugurated President, Dr. Pyeong-Koo Lee, reaffirms KIGAM's roles and responsibilities. Since KIGAM is Korea’s unique government-funded Geoscience R&D organization, we must fulfill our roles as the socially responsible entity that serves Korea's most important needs. On top of that, Dr. Lee has emphasized that KIGAM’s expertise in Geoscience will contribute to protecting public safety and solve societal problems in Geoscience fields that cannot be easily addressed in the private sector.
