The Online 56th CCOP Annual Session & the 75th Steering Committee Meeting

CCOPCCOP

The 56th CCOP Annual Session and the 75th Steering Committee Meeting were held online on November 3~5, 2020. The original plan was to meet in Bangkok, Thailand if the COVID-19 is disappeared into thin air and everyone is free to cross the borders. However, social distance and quarantine are ongoing for nearly 10 months, and people endure tiresome struggles against deadly viruses.

The Annual Session began with a series of Welcoming Speeches from Thailand, the host country, and Special Messages from CCOP T/S. Dr. Bok Chul Kim, the Permanent Representative of ROK as well as KIGAM President, also greeted KIGAM’s close international friends over online. The group photo was taken by the unconventional ‘zoom-in style’ only for the Heads of Delegations.

After the CCOP Progress Report by the Technical Secretariat, the CCOP Member Countries had presentations about the ongoing Geoscience activities and plans. This year’s Korea’s Country Report was unique from the usual contents by adding this global abnormality. Despite the pandemic, KIGAM is the leading organization to implement Korea’s ‘Green New Deal’ policies by expanding our Geoscience R&D capabilities. Also, the CCOP Cooperating Countries and Organizations continued their activity reports on the following day.

The Steering Committee Meeting was on the third day of the meeting where they dealt with financial matters and future implementation plans by introducing ‘Working Group for the CCOP Strategic Plan 2021-2025’ and ‘New Initiatives and Proposed Working Plans in 2021’.

This year, the ‘Thematic Session’ was scheduled on December 15 to 16 virtually as well. At the session, KIGAM emphasized the Geohazard in the coastal area, Mineral exploration methods, geo-data, and Geoscience Edu-program in the time of COVID-19.

Since the meetings were online, it is difficult to fix on certain time-zone, considering multiple countries were participating at once. CCOP T/S well-organized the online meeting, and hopefully, we meet each other face-to-face soon.
