NOVEL TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT OF CO2 MINERALIZATION USING CONCENTRATED WATER

KIGAM has developed technologies to preserve a clean environment, which will be threatened by two crucial issues from seawater desalination processes around the world. Emissions of CO2 and brine are increasing.

CO2, a greenhouse gas, turns into stable minerals (i.e., CO2 mineralization) by reactions with the Ca and Mg dissolved in brine discharged from seawater desalination. Obviously, Mg will not be a rare metal item when using KIGAM’s technologies in the Republic of Korea. We can obtain very much Mg-CO2 mineral (~95% purity) from brine without a refinery process. A major content of brine, NaCl, is converted to NaOH, which is essential for the eco-mineralization of CO2.

Seawater desalination will be widely adopted in many countries due to the need for water security. This will cause massive environmental issues. However, KIGAM can keep the earth clean.
