Mantle Xenolith

Mantle xenoliths are clasts of upper mantle rocks entrained within rapidly rising alkali basalt magmas, parent materials of alkali basalt, kimberlite and lamprophyre.

The majority of mantle xenoliths are ultrabasic rocks in composition, consisting of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and spinel, providing precious information on physicochemical properties of upper mantle.

Mantle xenoliths provide direct evidence about components and evolution of Earth interior and evolution of magma.
