Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (VIGMR) and Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) have opened Global Climate Change Carbon Mineralization Hub Center at the Headquarter of VIGMR in Hanoi, Vietnam on the 13th November, 2017. In this opening Ceremony, Mr. Young Min You, Minister of Ministry of Science and ICT of the Korean government (MSIT), Dr. Nguyen Linh Ngoc, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnamese government (MONRE), Dr. Tran Tan Van, President of VIGMR and Dr. Joong-Ho Synn, President of KIGAM were attended to be witness of the bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and Korea.
MSIT of the Korean government launched the Carbon Mineralization Flagship Project of Carbon Resources Recycling Development Strategy* through the 33rd National Science and Technology Advisory Council in 28th August, 2017. The purpose of the Global Hub Center between VIGMR and KIGAM is to widely expand and disseminate the Korean style cutting edge technology of Carbon Capture Utilization Storage (CCUS) technology in Southeast Asia region by successfully implementing carbon Mineral Flagship Project.
* Carbon Mineralization Flagship Project of Carbon Resources Recycling Development Strategy: A demonstration project of Korean style of CCUS which 41 industries, universities and government agencies including KIGAM, Gangwon Province, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea District Heating Corporation (KDHC), Hanil Cement Co., Ltd., Seoul National University etc are included.
Especially, MONRE* of Vietnamese government who is a National Designated Entities of Vietnam has requested the technical assistance of Climate Technology Center & Network (CTCN) to reduce the Green House Gas (GHG) emission in the field of paper and cement industry where the majority percentage of the GHGs produced in Vietnam.
The Global Hub Center, which is equipped with efficient processing and treatment of GHGs and by-products generated by the rising number of coal fired power plants, is expected to contribute to the reduction of GHGs emission and successful resource recycling policies in Vietnam.
Korea-Vietnam Technology Cooperation Initiative has been systematically and strategically ongoing by establishing network in both countries, finding out the demand for the technologies, feasibility test and so on.
Last October, 2017, KIGAM has established a network with Vietnamese by inviting two delegates from MONRE to the occasion of introducing the Korea’s outstanding technologies and related companies as well as introducing Korean domestic policies on Global Climate Change.
There are two bilateral projects* between Vietnam and Korea to cooperate on the field of Global Climate Change and to find out demands on technology
* 1) The Empirical Research on the Waste Paper Recycling based on Carbon Mineralization Technology in Phong Khe, Vietnam2) The Empirical Research on the Production of Green Cement based on Carbon Mineralization Technology in Cao Ngan, Vietnmam.
Both Vietnam and Korea is planning to continuously pursue bilateral cooperation for the Global Climate Change Technology. Participating stake holders from industry, university and research centers are going to carry out local investigation and to establish network with related organizations through the Hub center in order to execute joint projects.
Through the Global Hub Center, both countries will strive to achieve sustainable technology transfer and overseas emission rights to 11.3% through early demonstration of technology and global technical cooperation process. For instance, Phong Khe region will establish their eco-friendly self-supporting city with the recycling technology. And these Korean technology is going to be applied to 86 newly built power plants in Vietnam. Furthermore, finding new industrial opportunities related to the 4th industry is another expected outcomes from the Global Hub Center.
Mr. Young Min You, Minister of MSIT stated that “it is my pleasure to participate in the signboard hanging ceremony and the opening ceremony of the Global Climate Change Carbon Mineralization Hub Center that strengthens partnership in a meaningful year that marks 25th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Korea” and “Through the hub center, we hope to contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions in both countries, and the construction of environmentally friendly and low carbon cities by promoting dissemination of Korean technology of the by-products and treatment of carbon dioxide in Vietnam”
Dr. Joong-Ho Synn, the President of KIGAM stated that “since COP 21 in 2015, KIGAM is trying its best to be the leader of developing world-class technologies and has launched Center for Carbon Mineralization.
The PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games, which one of its theme is environment friendly Olympic Games, selected the Carbon Mineralization technology as one of the representative technologies. To advertise effectiveness of those technologies, demonstration project on Carbon Money System will be operated and also, there will be a booth for promoting Low Carbon City.
