Marine Geology Research Center

‘From Korean waters to deep ocean, mapping geology and discovering resources’ The Marine Geology Research Center surveys seafloor bathymetry and subseafloor geology from Korea's coastal waters to deep ocean, discovering marine mineral deposits. Using Tamhae-3, Korea's state-of-the-art geophysical research vessel, the center maps seafloor topography and analyzes marine sediment cores to trace paleoclimate. The center explores critical marine mineral resources and provides geological data for maritime boundary delimitation, marine infrastructure development, and marine geohazard assessment to protect Korea's maritime territory and resource security.

Research Areas

  • Secured marine geological survey and marine resource exploration ·analysis technologies from Korean waters to deep ocean basins
  • Characterized rare earth element distribution and enrichment mechanisms in Pacific deep-sea sediments
  • Published high-resolution marine geological maps for Korean Peninsula marginal seas
  • Developed seafloor active fault characterization and marine geohazard risk assessment systems
  • Implemented real-time marine geohazard monitoring with automated early warning systems
