Marine Geophysical Exploration Research Center

Utilizing Korea’s only state-of-the-art geophysical exploration vessel, Tamhae-III, the Center conducts research on geophysical exploration technologies to support national marine policies and energy security. From coastal waters to the open ocean, we take the lead in identifying promising offshore resource areas, providing high-resolution marine geological data for maritime boundary delimitation, and developing technologies for the exploration and monitoring of CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) repositories to support carbon neutrality. We are also advancing our foundational infrastructure by acquiring high-performance marine exploration equipment and parallel data processing computers.

Research Areas

  • Secured world-class marine geophysical exploration technologies and applied them to domestic and international exploration projects
  • Conducted coastal and deep-sea geophysical surveys using Tamhae-III, Korea’s advanced research vessel
  • Provided geological data for continental shelf delimitation and international negotiations
  • Carried out high-resolution exploration and technology development for CCS repository site selection to support carbon neutrality
  • Developed seafloor sensor-based monitoring technologies to track reservoir behavior and subsurface fluid migration
