Geological Research Center

The Geological Research Center publishes the standard geological map of Korea, which serves as a fundamental public resource for national land use and planning. The Center places a primary focus on research into the tectonic evolution of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of an integrated stratigraphic framework. In addition, the Center is generating new practical geological information that meets diverse national priorities and societal demands, including the distribution characteristics of geogenic critical hazardous elements, assessment of factors affecting long-term crustal stability, and the mapping of geological heritage sites.

Major Activities

  • Publication of the national standard geological map (1:50,000 scale) and various thematic geological maps
  • Investigation on the tectonic evolution of the Korean Peninsula and establishment of a integrated stratigraphic framework (KIGAM Lexicon)
  • Development of a regional distribution map (1:250,000 scale) of geogenic critical and hazardous elements
  • Compilation of datasets on factors affecting crustal stability assessments
  • Production of a geological heritage distribution map
