Groundwater Resources Research Center

Groundwater Resources Research Center is a national leading group to develop technologies of smart investigation, assessment, and utilization for sustainable groundwater resources and ground heat energies. It contributes to regional economic development and quality of life improvement through the development of integrated hydrogeological environmental management technologies and reduction of carbon emissions with respond to the climate crisis. Its main research areas are as follows.

Research Areas

  • Digital twin, IoT-based real-time monitoring, and physical well logging-based 3D hydrogeological modeling technologies for the development and maintenance of large-capacity groundwater supply facilities, such as underground dams, radial collector well, riverbank infiltration, and artificial recharge.
  • GeoAI-based mapping of groundwater potential and quality and hydrogeological map for site selection in water shortage areas.
  • A Hybrid geothermal heat exchange system utilizing groundwater for sustainable heating and cooling applications.
  • Selection of promising groundwater intake sources and development of large-capacity groundwater wells in Boeun area of the Geumgang river basin
  • Proposal of potential water intake sources and development of large-capacity groundwater wells to mitigate drought in Gwangju province
  • Groundwater information map of the main river basins including Hangang, Gumgang, Nakdonggang, Youngsangang·Seomjingang river basins
  • Sustainable geothermal heating and cooling systems for hybrid utilization of groundwater and ground heat
  • System-scale performance changes in nationwide geothermal heating and cooling systems in response to climate change
