Integrated Earthquake Monitoring Research Center

The Integrated Earthquake Monitoring Research Center contributes to public safety and national policy making by providing accurate information of natural and induced seismicity based on observations of surface displacements, ground motion, and infrasound. To provide high-quality earthquake data stably, we have conducted various studies for improving operation of the Korea Integrated Seismic System(KISS), maintenance of data quality, and precision of earthquake monitoring. We have also monitored nuclear tests by operating the National Data Center(NDC) and the IMS(International Monitoring System) stations, which are associated with the international organization, CTBTO (Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization).

Major Activities

  • Characterization of earthquake activities and seismic sources in the Korean Peninsula using the Integrated National Earthquake Monitoring Network.
  • Advancement of micro-earthquake detection and fault identification by using dense earthquake monitoring system
  • Operation of CTBTO NDC and surveillance of artificial earthquake activities in neighboring countries
  • Establishment of an open platform system for providing the public with earthquake information
  • Operation of the national seismic network and integration and management of earthquake data from foreign and domestic cooperative organizations
  • Integrated analysis of seismic and infrasound data in and around the Korean Peninsula
  • Publication of the Annual Earthquake Report from precise reassessment of seismic sources.
