Geological Carbon Storage Research Center

The Geological Carbon Storage Research Center brings together experts from diverse disciplines to mitigate global climate change through research in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). We support Korea’s commitment to achieving the 2030 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets and the 2050 net-zero strategy. We develop integrated CCS technologies encompassing the characterization of CO2 storage, transport, injection, and storage safety assessment to ensure secure and efficient CO2 storage. Additionally, our research outcomes, such as extending CCS monitoring technologies into disaster and safety management, demonstrate broad societal benefits. Equipped with robust infrastructure and networks necessary for transboundary CCS collaboration and large-scale domestic CCS demonstrations, our center aims to lead in establishing both national and global CCS standards and legal frameworks.

Research Areas

  • Characterization of CCS storage candidates (eg. 3D geological model)
  • Laboratory validation of additives utilization for efficient CO2 injection
  • Development of core imaging system for understanding CO2 plume
  • Bio-geochemical and hydro-mechanical research for storage integrity
  • Cost-effective CCS monitoring with distributed optical fiber sensing
  • International collaboration laying foundations for transboundary CCS
