YSRM 2017 & NDRMGE 2017 Held in Jeju
The President of Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), Dr. Joong-Ho Synn, attended ISRM Young Scholars’ Symposium on Rock Mechanics (YSRM 2017) and International Conference on New Developments in Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering 2017 (NDRMGE 2017) which was held in Ramada Plaza Jeju, Republic of Korea from May 10 to May 14.

It was organized by the Korean Society for Rock Mechanics (KSRM), the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME) and KIGAM. Also, the International Society for Rock Mechanics sponsored. The purpose of the symposium on “Challenges and Innovations in Rock Mechanics and Engineering” was to encourage academic exchange on the rock engineering technology as well as young rock mechanics engineers.
Starting with the beginning of a preliminary lecture on May 10, there were poster session and presentations from May 11 to May 12. On the last day of the conferment, a technical tour (Jeju Stone Park, Jeju World Natural Heritage Center and other UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites) was arranged to explore the beauty of Jeju Island for the participants.

Dr. Joong-Ho Synn noted that the field of rock mechanics plays a critical role by inventing and developing cutting-edge technology that combat against challenges such as global climate change and environmental energy concerns. He highlighted that the members of KSRM should be leaders and also this symposium should be a platform for solving those transnational concerns and for moving beyond the existing boundaries of current rock mechanic researches by actively sharing their opinion and academic knowledge.

On May 10, there were the annual session and presentation of YSRM 2017 and NDRMGE 2017. At the annual session, Dr. Joong-Ho Synn, who was the previous president of KSRM received the appreciation plaque for his devotion towards the progress of KSRM and also the field of rock mechanics.
