KIGAM-GSJ singed LOI on Joint Research of Active Faults

Dr. Joong-Ho Synn, the President of Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), signed Letter of Intent (LOI) with National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) acting through its Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ).
The major purpose of the LOI is to establish the foundation of joint research on active faults between Korea and Japan. Japan is known as a country whose level of technology and knowledges on earthquake is advanced than other countries due to its frequent experiences of earthquake.
Recently, number of small and big magnitude earthquakes have been occurred in Korean peninsular. Especially, Gyeong-ju city where located in southeastern part of Korea, was hit by two large scale of earthquakes of magnitude 5.1 and 5.8 on September 12, 2016. The main earthquake was the largest earthquake happened in Korea since 1978. After the main one, more than 500 times of after-shocks between 3.5 and 4.5 magnitude have been reported in the city and also nearby areas. Eventually, these circumstances has led to the conclusion of signing LOI between KIGAM and GSJ of Japan.
In response to the LOI, GSJ will provide the technical assistance and training sessions for the experts in KIGAM with aims of strengthening the research capacity of KIGAM regarding the studies of active faults. Also, both institutes have agreed on dispatching KIGAM’s experts to Japan in order to participate into GSJ’s field investigation on active faults. In the long run, KIGAM will apply knowledge and know-hows of GSJ into KIGAM’s research capacity in this area.
