The President of KIGAM, Dr. Joong-Ho Synn, Inaugurated as the Chairperson of CCOP Steering Committee

Dr. Joong-Ho Synn, the President of Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), elected as the Chairperson of the CCOP Steering Committee. Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP) is an intergovernmental organization founded in 1966 with aims of contributing to resolve the issues and the concerns that are related to geoscience. Up until now, fourteen countries* from Asia region have been joined as the Member countries.* The list of Member countries: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam

 

The former President of KIGAM(Dr. Kyu Han Kim) who  served as the Chairperson of CCOP Steering Committee since November 2015, resigned from his seat in CCOP Steering Committee due to the end of his presidential term in KIGAM. 

 

In order to continue the Chairpersonship, the Republic of Korea referred the agenda on the succession matters of Dr. Synn to the 67th Steering Committee meeting which held in Bangkok, Thailand from November 4 to November 5, 2016. 

 

Dr. Joong-Ho Synn, the President of KIGAM was elected  by common consent with the full support from all the CCOP Member countries. Dr. Joong-Ho Synn’s term as the Chairperson of CCOP Steering Committee officially starts from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017. Later, if the Member countries approve, his term can be extended.

 

The Chairperson of CCOP Steering Committee is the official representative of CCOP and has the right of final approval on international joint projects among fourteen Asian Member countries in order to solve the major concerns in the field of geoscience.
