The 2nd KIGAM Earth-Loving Art Contest Celebrating the Earth Day

 

Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources held “The 2nd KIGAM Earth-Loving Art Contest” on April 21, 2018. Approximately, 200 elementary school students and their family members in total of 500 people were gathered at the KIGAM Geological Museum Green Plaza. The KIGAM Earth-Loving Art Contest is to inform about the meaning of the Earth Day, and its main theme is “Earth/Geoscience/Resources for Kids” with the motto of “Let’s Save the Earth Together”. Today’s event is for the young children in the nationwide who will lead the future of Korea’s science and technology developments. KIGAM recognizes that familiarizing the science to the public is social responsibility, and this time we chose it in an art form for younger generation. Also, this event was doubly special to celebrate KIGAM’s centennial anniversary, so the organizers expanded the sizes of the event and awards. KIGAM considers those kinds of events as the contributions to society, which incorporates science utilization and fun in our daily lives.

 

The popularity of the contest was enormous huge hit from the start because the all spots were filled in an hour. The topics for the contest were Free subject related to the Earth and geoscience Landscape painting of KIGAM. The judges are consisted with the organizing committee members in KIGAM and specially invited from outside for the fairness. They carefully reviewed the paintings in both categories of lower grade classes (1st-3rd grades) and upper grade classes (4th-6th grades) with each 100 participants.

This year, 10 distinguished pieces were selected for awards based on artistic quality, suitability, and creativity criterias. The two prizes for the upper grades (mayor’s award and superintendent’s award) were given with a free admission to KIGAM’s popular experience program, “I am a Field Master!” 


 

Along with the painting contest, this year’s event had various science experience activities and concerts which let all the participants enjoy the event. KIGAM offered various science experience activities such as T-rex and Edmontonia dinosaur craft kit, Earth-shaped soap craft kit, experiencing in producing electricity with self-powered bicycles, and watching science magic show to all participating students and their family to celebrate the meaning of the Earth Day. Also, KIGAM gave Lycon Clay craft kit, KIGAM Lounge drinks to all participants, and they enjoyed other extra events such as caricature & face painting event and outdoor music concert along with some children’s favorite snacks.

 

Dr. Weon-Seo KEE, the acting president of KIGAM, said “Celebrating the centennial anniversary of KIGAM, the “2nd KIGAM Earth-Loving Art Contest” is a great opportunity to emphasize the importance of Earth, Mineral, and Environment for the next generation.” He also added, “KIGAM is striving to take a Mercenat role to continually provide its excellent intellectual property to future scientists from the next generation and develop as a representative of science institutes practicing social contribution.
