The 53rd Annual Session and 69th Steering Committee meeting of the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP*) were held in Cebu and Bohol Island, Philippines. The 53rd Annual Session was held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, Cebu City, Philippines on 16 – 19 October 2017.
* CCOP: Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia is an intergovernmental organization whose mission is to facilitate and coordinate the implementation of applied geoscience programmes in East and Southeast Asia in order to contribute to economic development and the improvement of the quality of life in the region.
In this year, both occasions were organized by the government of Philippine through the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Energy Resource Development Bureau of the Department of Energy and other relevant Philippine agencies with the CCOP Technical Secretariat
During the Annual Session, Dr. Young Joo LEE, Director of Global Cooperation Division of KIGAM was elected as Vice-Chairperson of the Session. Unfortunately, Dr. Joong-Ho Synn, had to attend the annual parliamentary audit so he had to attend from the end of the Steering Committee meeting. This year the topic of the thematic session was “the Rople of Geoscience in Safeguarding Our Environment” and the researchers from KIGAM from various major had participated and presented their papers.
The Korean Delegation informed the Session that they will host the 54th CCOP Annual Session and the 71st CCOP Steering Committee Meeting, to be held in Busan, the Republic of Korea on 28 October to 3 November 2018. To promote it, Busan Promotion Night was held in 17 October 2018. Mr. Nam Bae PARK, Busan Metropolitan City was invited and he delivered a Welcome Speech to the attendees.
Due to the influence of a Typhoon Lan in the Philippines and the Northwest Pacific Ocean in 2017, the field trip to Bohol island was delayed. Even though the field trip was cancelled, delegations who were suppose to participate into the Steering Committee safely arrived in Bohol island.
The 69th CCOP Steering Committee meeting was held at the Bellevue Resort, Panglao Island, Bohol, Philippines on 20 ~ 21 October, 2017. The meeting was attended by delegates of the Member Countries, Advisory Group, and CCOP Technical Secretariat. End of this year 2017, CCOP Steering Committee Chairpersonship of Dr. Joong-Ho Synn is going to be completed. The meeting elected the Permanent Representative of Malaysia to CCOP, Mr. Shahar Effendi bin Abdullah Azizi as the next CCOP Steering Committee Chairperson for year 2018-2019, respectively.
