KIGAM participated in the 135th Anniversary of VSEGEI

           Dr. Joong-Ho Synn, the President of Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), participated in the 135th anniversary of VSEGEI which were held in St. Petersburg, Russia in January 31st 2017. As a respond to the official invitation from VSEGEI, key leaders of Geoscience institution such as British Geological Survey (BGS), United States Geological Survey (USGS), China Geological Survey (CGS) attended the anniversary to congratulate VSEGEI.

 

*A.P Karpinsky Russian Geological Research Institute (VSEGEI): VSEGEI is a Federal State research institution under the umbrella of the Federal Agency for the Subsoil Use. January 31, 2017 marks the 135th anniversary of establishing the Geological Committee(Geolcom), the first-ever state geological institution in Russia, whose successor and custodian of traditions is the VSEGEI. Provision on the Geological Committee was approved by Emperor Alexander III.

          At the event, Dr. Joong-Ho Synn addressed the future direction of KIGAM’s role and the development of future oriented technologies in the Geoscience field by giving a presentation which entitled ‘100 years of history: Reading the Past, Writing the Future.’ On the next day, February 1st, Dr. Joong-Ho Synn and KIGAM delegates visited Korean consulate and had a short meeting with consul to discuss about the latest developmental trends of the arctic research in Russia. After that day, there was a seminar on the joint-research projects on the Arctic region together with VNIIOkeangeologia which is one of the top arctic research institutions in Russia.

 

*VNIIOkeangeologia (The All-Russia Scientific Research Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Ocean): VNIIOkeangeologia is a head research organization of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation and the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use of Russia in the field of geological study of the continental shelf, the Ocean, the Arctic and the Antarctic, is administered by the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use of Russia.

 

      Dr. Joong-Ho Synn stated that “through this visit to VSEGEI and other Geoscience related research institutions, more active joint-research projects with Russia, is very much expected.”

 

          Since 2002, KIGAM have been engaged with VSEGEI through the joint-research projects on several areas of cooperation.
