Introduction

The Marine Geology and Geophysical Exploration Research Center is conducting multidisciplinary marine geoscience research and world-class technology development by using ‘Tamhae 2’ and ‘Tamhae 3’ vessels. The center works in various marine science and technology, including identifying potential areas of submarine mineral and energy resources, providing marine geological information for the negotiation of maritime boundaries, and participating in the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP)

Major Activities

  • Securing world-class geophysical exploration technology and utilizing it for domestic and international research projects
  • Publication of marine geological thematic maps the around Korean seas
  • Publication of the coastal geohazard factor distribution maps
  • Conducting international joint research on marine geoscience through participation in the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP)
  • Production of marine scientific data for the delimitation of the continental shelf boundaries
  • Operation of marine core center and technology development of high-resolution analysis of marine geological sediment samples
