Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (Kyu Han Kim, the President of KIGAM) signed a MOU with the Agency for Research and Development of Energy and Mineral Resource of the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ARDEMR) at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul in May 16, 2016.
※Following four R&D centers are parts of the ARDEMR which is an affiliated organization of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
1. LEMIGAS, R&D Center for Oil and Gas Technology
2. tekMIRA, R&D Center for Mineral and Coal Technology
3. MGI, R&D Center for Marine Geology Institute
4. R&D Center for Electricity, New and Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation

The MOU has signed for the purpose of strengthening the R&D cooperative link between Korea and Indonesia specifically in the field of energy resources. Another purpose of the MOU is to expand the scope of research areas that are mutually interested in.

In fact, KIGAM is already conducting the joint research with R&D center of Marine Geology Institute, one of the R&D centers of ARDEMR. Based on the MOU, both institutes are planning to conduct the research on the topic of inspecting the placer deposit in coastal areas, investigating the environment of paleoceanography and climate change, and joint documenting regarding the IODP drilling proposals. Especially, the KIGAM’s probe, 2nd generation of Tam Hae and Indonesia’s probe, GEOMARIN-Ⅲ will be collaborating on its duty of joint ocean surveyor in order to intensify the cooperation in the field of Marine Geoscience.

In addition, KIGAM is also already progressing on the joint research on the field of petroleum and energy resources with LEMIGAS which is another R&D center of ARDEMR. Both institutes are participating into the joint project in order to achieve the advancement of the technologies for the unexploited basins for petroleum resources and assess the potential unrevealed value of carbonate reservoir. Also both of them are promoting the discussions on the research regarding collecting and saving the CO2 by utilizing the gas field

After the signing the MOU, the Head of Agency of ARDEMR with its delegations will visit KIGAM on 17 May 2016, to talk about the details of the development of technology in the field of petroleum gas, coal and mineral resources, marine science, mineral resources research.

Through the MOU, active interchange of the information regarding the placer deposit in coastal areas of Indonesia, CO2 – EOR technology, and co-research on unexploited for basins for petroleum resources are expected. Furthermore, the joint research on the change of sedimentation and restoration of paleoceanography, and development cooperation for CO2 reserve technology to reduce the green house gas due to the climate change are the expected results from the MOU.

Dr. Kyu Han Kim, the President of KIGAM pointed out that cooperation with researchers in Indonesia will be strengthened to raise the security level for Korea’s security on resource in order to prepare for the future and understand the changes of the Earth
