KIGAM, signed technical cooperation MOU in the area of oil field with RIPI

Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (Dr. Kyu Han Kim, the President of KIGAM) and RIPI have signed a MOU for the joint study on Iranian carbonate field at the Iranian Oil Exhibition in May 5, 2016.
* Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI); This is a R&D assignment organization under National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) which established in 1959. Currently, this institute is responsible for research and development projects on the 60 different fields of the oil.
Even though Iran is a resource reach country with the 4th largest petroleum reserves and with the 2nd largest gas reserves (2015), falling behind in technical skill and decreasing in the export outlets due to the economic sanction have eventually triggered the deterioration of the oil fields.
This MOU has been singed in order to strengthen the cooperative R&D relationship of the oil fields. Additionally, based on this ties, discovering such business opportunities is the purpose of the signing the MOU.
Both institute are planning to conduct the joint research for the purpose of developing the productivity technologies, assessing the deteriorated oil fields and investigating the geological characteristics of the Iranian carbonate field. Furthermore, technical cooperation regarding the unconventional resource development areas such as assessing the shale gas fields and the technical skills are part of the discussion.
Especially, in order to expand joint R&D field and activate the exchange of the human resources, both institutes are aiming to hold the technical seminar and the workshop in Korea by this year.
While RIPI visited KIGAM in November 2016, RIPI have asked KIGAM for deducting the joint research field. So that the VIP’s visit to Iran paved the way for signing MOU.
Under the MOU, through the reevaluating the information on Iranian carbonate field and additional production and sharing, the detailed technical information will be provided to the Korean oil companies who wish to join into the Iranian oil market. Thus, the opportunity to preoccupy the optimum spot for developing the oil, shale gas, and mining field is one of the expected outcome from the MOU. Also, enhancing the domestic analytical technology, improving the quality of the apparatus, and promoting the competency in the market place are expected results as well from the investigation of the Iranian bore hole sample by utilizing the Korean analytical model.
Dr. Kyu Han Kim, the President of KIGAM stated that expanding opportunities for the joint research with the representative country in terms of producing oil, Iran, is the next phase of th strategy. He also pointed out that the Korean oil related companies who are interested in the Iranian market will be supported with those data derived from the joint research on Iranian carbonate and shale gas field.
