2nd Asia-Pacific Business Forum: Korean CCUS Technology for Climate Change

KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) will host the ‘2nd Asia-Pacific Business Forum: Korean CCUS Technology for Climate Change’. It will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from March 7 to 8, 2016.

KIGAM cooperated with CCOP (Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia), UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and KTCC (Korea-Thai Chamber of Commerce) to organize of this event.

As a follow-up action to the Paris Agreement at the 2015 United Nations Climate Conference (COP 21), all parties shall prepare, communicate and maintain successive nationally determined contributions intended to achieve mitigation of CO2 emissions. Accordingly, Asia-Pacific countries including Korea must establish sustainable global cooperation on CO2 emission reduction for the mitigation of climate change.

KIGAM has researched climate change mitigation technologies that make use of waste and CO2 (i.e. Low carbon high-functional green cement by utilization coal power plant ash and CO2; Waste paper pulp In-situ Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) technology by utilization of CO2) as the Korean CCUS technology.

These climate change CCUS technologies developed in Korea will be shared with Asia-Pacific countries as climate change solutions, before further strengthening of global cooperation on water and disease issues.

In particular, this business forum will be a platform to establish international cooperation networks between industry, universities, and institutes, as well as establishing MOUs and business networks between companies from Korea and Asia-Pacific countries.

Through business networks between Hanil Cement Co., Ltd, as a representative private company of Korea, the Korean-Thai Chamber of Commerce, and other companies, new business models and new growth potential will be generated via technical cooperation with developing countries.

By utilization of international climate change funds, technologies and demonstration will be expanded to developing countries with education and technology transfer. The forum will also kick off a Korean CCUS R&D Project to Climate Change with participation by Asia-Pacific countries.
