The 45th Congress of International Association of Hydrogeologists in Korea

Today, the earth is suffering from frequent droughts and floods due to the climate change, ergo, water supply and hydrological imbalance are intensifying. In the case of Korea, there are 48 urban areas where experienced three or more water shortages due to drought since 1990s. The stability and equity issue of regional water supply is also insufficient to the local communities.

Groundwater artificial recharge technology is a technology that can solve the water shortage caused by climate change. It secures the supply differentiated water resources by regional and seasonal corresponding methods to improve water quality. This technology is globally used in known-water shorted regions and/or developed such as in USA, Japan, Europe, Middle East, and Africa Etc. Groundwater experts from all over the world gathered in Daejeon Korea to find ways to solve these climate change problems and develop technology for ecological preservation. 

 



As the co-chair for the “45th Congress of International Association of Hydrogeologists”, Korea Institute of Geoscience & Mineral Resources (KIGAM, President Dr. Kim Bok Chul) hosts the "Groundwater and Life Science: Technology & Technology" project at Daejeon Convention Center (DCC) from September 9th to 14th.

*IAH 2018 was co-hosted by Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, Korea Groundwater and Soil Environment Society (Chairman Park Jae-woo), and International Hydrological Society Korea (IAH-KNC).

※ IAH(International Association of Hydrogeologists): The IAH was established in 1957 in Paris, France, with the aim of studying and understanding the proper management and conservation of groundwater for public interest in the world. It is the most prestigious hydrogeologists society in the world. Currently, its entire membership holders are about 4,500.

The Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources commemorates its origin 100th anniversary & establishment of 70th anniversary in 2018, and KIGAM hosts many international conferences to inform the world about K-Geoscience, especially on groundwater and geology.

At he IAH 2018, more than 700 experts from 65 countries will visiting during the conference. In particular, KIGAM and IAH Korea will focus on sustainable and equitable distribution of water resources, the latest international issues related to ecological preservation and quality of life, and the use of groundwater to overcome drought.

IAH 2018 will deal with 9 topics and 52 sessions. Each session will provide a forum for exchanging of information on groundwater related issues, including health, life, ecosystem conservation, energy and disasters, as well as international research results and today’s R&D trends.

Dr. Kim Bok Chul said, "hosting IAH 2018 will lead to a positive effect on the international status of groundwater research in Korea and benefit the local community in Daejeon." Korea will support international research on sustainable groundwater resources research”.
