KIGAM in the 『16th International Workshop on the Cooperative Project』
Dr. Weon-Seo KEE, the acting President of KIGAM, delivered welcoming remarks for the 『16th International Workshop on the Cooperative Project』 on July 10th in Jeju Island Korea.
This international joint project was initiated in 2002 with four countries (China, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Russia), and Korea joined this project as a late comer in the very next year. The name of the project is ‘Atlas of Geological Maps of Central Asia and Adjacent Areas’. In 2007, the 「Phase I」 of the Project was completed with integrating geotectonics and distribution of mineral & energy resources at the scale of 1:2,500,000.
The 「Phase II」 was ‘3D Geological Structures and Metallogeny of the Northern-Central-Eastern Asia’, which was introduced as the successful multinational ongoing project at the 『33rd International Geological Congress(IGC)』 special session in 2008 Norway.
Now, the project is at the 「sub-phase III-2」, ‘Deep Processes and Metallogeny of the Northern-Central-Eastern Asia’. This phase is for finalizing a 20-year-long map-making process. This comprehensive map making involves with multi-disciplinary academic fields on geology, geophysics and geochemistry that reveal the characteristics of geological structures and mineralization in the project areas.
This international workshop lasted for the entire week (July 9~14) including extensive field excursions, and there are more than 60 scientists from China, Mongolia and Russia as well as scientists and researchers from the nationwide.
