1st KIGAM-GTK Workshop

Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) and Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) held the '1st KIGAM-GTK Workshop' on September 11 (Fri.) 2015 in Espoo Finland.

 

KIGAM and GTK signed the MOU on October 23, 2013 with the presence of Mr. Jan Vapaavuori, Minister of Economic Affair.

 

The 'KIGAM-GTK Workshop' is the follow-up from the last 2013 MOU between KIGAM and GTK. Today’s co-joint workshop is for discussing cutting-edge technologies on mineral exploration & assessment, spent nuclear energy processing, mineral ore smelting and processing, and utilization of underground spaces.

The event officially began with the remarks from the leaders of both KIGAM President Dr. Kyu Han Kim and GTK Director General Prof. Mika Nykänen. Then, the presentations were followed.

 

As for KIGAM, presentations are leaded by as followings: “Development of mining and geophysical exploration techniques for the deep-seated metallic ore deposit” by Dr. Park Sam Gyu (Director for Mineral Resources Development Research Center), “Current activities on mineral processing technology of KIGAM” by Dr. Kim Wan Tae, “Development and use of underground space in Korea – today and tomorrow” by Dr. Park Eui Seob (Director for Underground Space Department), and “Current situation of high level radioactive waste disposal plan and R&D activity in Korea” by Dr. Chae Byung Gon (Director for Integrated Geoenvironment Research Center).

 

On September 10, the KIGAM envoys also visited low-level waste disposal facility for storage in Olkiluoto, which was arranged by GTK.
