Experiencing K-Culture for the KIGAM Foreign Researchers  

Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) held the 2018 KIGAM Spring ‘Fun’ Korean Culture Day for foreign researchers on May 29th (Tue.). About twenty foreign researchers and family members of KIGAM participated for the event, and the event was held at Handure Village in Okcheon, Chungcheongbukdo. The participants had a chance to experience Korean culture by Dubu and Injeolmi making and Songwha Mushroom picking.

The participants have watched the Dubu making process with great interest. Some spun a Korean millstone and put blended beans in a Korean traditional pot. Their exclamation for the completion of the process and enjoyment of dubu and kimchi were the highlight of the dubu making experience. 


 

On the afternoon, all the participants were actively engaged in Injeolmi making. After having heard that Injeolmi gets chewier when the dough is hammered more, the participants started hammering the dough stronger with mallets. When the hammered dough was shaped as Injeolmi and spread with bean powder, the Injeolmi looked very appetizing.

Songhwa Mushroom picking was held at Okcheon Songgo Mushroom Farmland. With great interest in mushrooms which were cultivated on sawdust, the participants started carefully picking up mushrooms following the instructions. After the mushroom picking, they enjoyed the mushroom tea and snack.

As they were wrapping up the day, many participants said ‘although we are living in Korea, we have not had chances to go outside of the city, and we would like to see the Korean culture event continued.

The K-Culture event was first held in 2009, and this year was the 8th K-Culture event. The event is for KIGAM foreign researchers and family members’ familiarity and favorable impression toward Korean culture.
