Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources(KIGAM) hosted an International symposium entitled “The CCOP-KIGAM Unconventional Oil and Gas Project” on June 9th at the K-Hotel in Gyeongju, Korea.

The symposium was hosted by KIGAM, and sponsored by Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy(MOTIE), Korea National Oil Corporation(KNOC) and Energy&Mineral Resources Development Association of Korea(EMRD).

Mr. Min Chul LEE(Director of MOTIE), Mr. Moon Kyu SEO(President of KNOC), Dr. Adichat SURINKUM(Director of CCOP Technical Secretariat) and Dr. Dae kyo CHEONG(President of the Geological Society of Korea) were presented for the opening ceremony.
For the symposium, approximately 150 experts from home and abroad including 14 ccop member countries were participated in total.

The symposium provided a great platform for participants to share and discuss their knowledges regarding status of trendy technologies and case studies on shale energy resources development in their countries.

Another important purpose of this symposium is to commemorate launching the new KIGAM-CCOP joint project with the topic “Mapping of Black Shale Formation for the Prediction of Shale Resources”.
Since becoming one of the CCOP member countries, it is the first ever case that Korea has taken the lead on conducting an international joint research project related to the global energy resources development. This project is mainly to evaluate and understand the shale oil and gas reserves of 14 CCOP countries and to make a map.

Dr. Kyu Han KIm, president of KIGAM said “It it a great opportunity to renew our previous understanding on shale energy resources.” and he added that Asian Nations need work together as one community to figure out new potentials for prospering asian nations through unconventional energy resources development.
