The Role of KIGAM in the Era of Hydrogen Economy

Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM, Acting President Dr. Kwang-Eun Kim) held the R&D forum about ‘The Role of KIGAM in the Era of Hydrogen Economy’ on November 2, 2021.

Hygrogen (H) is the the fundamental element to many essential to the survival on the earth, i.e. water (HO), and not to mention ‘H’ is the atomic number 1 on the periodic table of the elements. The importance of hydrogen (H) is growing in realizing the environment-friendly at the same time pollution-zero ‘hydrogen-based economy’ at the national level. KIGAM believes that there are promising roles and in Geoscience and hydrogen R&D.

Today’s forum was to propose the possible future hydrogen-related R&D and policies of Korea in the field of Geoscience, and even further promoting a direction for collaborating model with industry-university-R&D research institutes.

In particular, the eco-friendly hydrogen-centered energy paradigm is accelerating the new shift of transformation in this recent global energy crisis. In this forum, the Geoscience researchers are expected to find ways to utilize hydrogen as the key element in geological resource technology for the new era.

This forum will be held in two sessions. In the first session, a special lecture was on hydrogen-based business promotion strategy, and a keynote lecture was also about the hydrogen economy and government technology policy directions in hydrogen-city infrastructure.

In the second session, we discussed the directions of hydrogen technology developments closely in relating to the research fields of KIGAM R&D.

Dr. Kim said,  “Hydrogen energy is a favorable and core energy source for climate change solutions and carbon neutrality realization.” He also said, “KIGAM will take the lead in transforming the hydrogen-centered energy paradigm.”
