On April 13, 2023, Dr. Pyeong-Koo Lee, a President of Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), attended a meeting with H.E. Mr. Roman Skylar, the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan at Hotel LOTTE in Seoul, Korea. This meeting was aimed at furthering the discussion of the last year's seminar, especially focusing on exploration of mineral deposits in Kazakhstan.

KIGAM has signed a Memorandum of Understanding(hereinafter referred to as "MOU") with two public parties* of the Republic of Kazakhstan on bilateral comprehensive geological cooperation on November 22, 2022. Since the MOU was signed, there has been numerous discussions on specific plans of cooperation implementation through video conferences.

*Department of Subsoil Use for Solid Minerals of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan

After thorough discussion, it was decided that KIGAM will visit Kazakhstan and field-examine the two lithium deposits with related experts of KIGAM in May of this year. Also, in June, a professional research team will be organized and dispatched to conduct first field exploration of the deposits with professional technologies such as drone exploration technology for about two weeks. Accordingly, Kazakhstan pledged not only active cooperation of Kazakhstan to this field examination and exploration of KIGAM, but also priority in exploration and development of the mineral deposits to Korean companies.

Dr. Pyeong-Koo Lee said in the meeting that "Depending on the results of the lithium mining exploration, we can expect the increase of Korean companies' investment to battery industries." And he stressed that "This could also bring a positive effect on Kazakhstan's economic growth through development and utilization of mineral resources, especially lithium, in Kazakhstan."
