STUDY OF GAS HYDRATE EXPLORATION IN THE ULLEUNG BASIN, EAST SEA KIGAM

The GH exploration team conducts research with two main goals. The first is to find prospecting structures with a high potential for gas hydrate in the Ulleung Basin. To achieve this, 2D seismic exploration data are acquired annually to characterize GH distributions in unexplored areas and to identify the potential GH regions. After processing the seismic data, the data are combed to find evidence of GH through various data analysis processes (Fig. 1). The second objective is to calculate the amounts of resources in chimney-type gas hydrate. Based on the results of analyses of drilling and seismic data, two types of formation mechanisms of chimney-type GH were found and resource assessments were conducted on each type by means of Monte Carlo simulations (Fig. 2).
