Development of IOR/EOR Technologies for UAE Carbonate Reservoirs

DEVELOPMENT OF IOR/EOR TECHNOLOGIES FOR UAE CARBONATE RESERVOIRS

From 2015, KIGAM has been a leading organization in the Korean consortium regarding the development and characterization of IOR/EOR technologies targeting the Haliba reservoir located in Abu Dhabi, UAE, which is operated by Al Dhafra Petroleum (ADNOC, KNOC, and GSE). The Haliba reservoir started commercial production from July 2019 and has 1.1 billion bbls of resources, which is six times more resources than initial estimates. This project mainly focuses on reservoir characterization and IOR/EOR technologies such as optimum reservoir modeling, optimum matrix-acidizing designs, gaseous stimulant fracturing in tight carbonate reservoirs, and low salinity based hybrid-EOR and nano-EOR (Fig.1a). During this project, we secured IOR/EOR leading technologies; results were realized as 28 SCI(E) papers and 9 international patent applications. In 2019, this project successfully closed and, at the Korea-UAE achievement conference (Fig.1b), held on Jeju Island, key technologies were delivered and an appreciation letter from the CEO of Al Dhafra was transferred to the KIGAM president.
