PROVIDING ANALYSIS SERVICES AND TESTING FOR GEOLOGICAL RESOURCES

The Geo-analysis Center conducts inorganic analyses of mineral elements and geological resources as well as underground and thermal water using ICP-MS, XRF, TIMS and corrosion analysis methods. In 2018, analysis services for a total of 17,895 samples for both domestic and foreign clients were provided by the Geo-Analysis Center of KIGAM. Recognized as a certified international testing agency by the KOLAS-ILAC, the qualification of KOLAS for technical competence of the laboratory was maintained through regular evaluations in 2018.

STUDY OF Δ14C PEAK (M12) IN AD 775 WITH AMS

The AMS (accelerating mass spectrometer) technique has been developed at the Geo-Analysis Center of KIGAM. This method is widely adopted in research on global environmental changes. Research on the Δ14C peak (M12) of AD 775 using AMS helped to determine the precise eruption age of Mt. Baekdoo during the delta 14C age. The precise eruption-age determination of Mt. Baekdoo is expected to provide precious information about predictions of volcanism on the Korean peninsula.

OFFICIAL REGISTRATION AND ASSESSMENT OF METEORITES

Since April of 2015, the Meteorite Registration Center has been operated for the official registration and traceability management of meteorites. An assessment service for meteorites is also provided for the general public in order to find and register meteorites in Korea. In 2018, assessment services were provided for 1519 rock samples suspected of being a meteorite, identifying 13 meteorites, including stony and iron meteorite types.
