NORTHERN GEOSCIENCE & MINERAL RESOURCES STRATEGY CENTER KIGAM

The Northern Geoscience & Mineral Resources Strategy Center is the only government research organization for mineral resources policies. It aims to lead national resource policies based on the highest level of capability, with the integration of technology, economics, and policy, and it strives to play a leading role in the development of the domestic resource industry. The Northern Geoscience & Mineral Resources Strategy Center is responsible for (1) the study of national policies affecting energy and mineral resource cooperation with northern region countries and for developing energy and mineral resources on the Korean Peninsula; (2) the study of a redesign of the legal system as it affects the mining industry for the efficient development of energy and mineral resources; (3) a feasibility study of mining projects and evaluations of the environmental impacts from mining projects; (4) the establishment of a mineral statistical database and the publishing of domestic and overseas mineral resources market information. Major achievements thus far have been the establishment of a master plan for overseas resource development (first through fifth), the establishment and release of official government statistics (mining statistics, mineral market statistics, rare metal statistics), the development of an international standard for mineral reservoir evaluations and the standardization of related economic evaluations, a survey of overseas resource development businesses, an improvement plan for the law system related to domestic continental shelf development, a study of mineral resource cooperation between South Korea and North Korea, and the establishment of F/S evaluations and strategies for energy and mineral resource business development.

ESTABLISHING AND SUPPORTING PRINCIPAL NATIONAL MINERAL RESOURCES POLICIES OF 2018

The Northern Geoscience & Mineral Resources Strategy Center conducted various R&D projects to support the establishment of national mineral resource policies by creating primary materials for policy decision-making and participating in the creation of a national master plan.

  • Establishment of a strategy for resource development in North Korea
  • Survey of overseas resource business development
  • Supporting the establishment of the sixth master plan for overseas resource development and of the third master plan pertaining to the development of Korean continental shelf resources
  • Support for the planning of cooperative projects between South Korea and North Korea
  • Geo-disaster realization platform based on virtual reality
  • Digital-twin platform for stratigraphic information

ANALYSIS OF GLOBAL AND KOREAN MINERAL COMMODITY MARKETS

This analysis deals with actual issues around the world and in domestic commodity markets to help understand annual trends in commodity markets, and it involves a detailed market analysis of selected mineral commodities, including two precious metals, six industrial metals and six non-metal industrial minerals.

PRODUCTION AND PROVISION OF MINERAL COMMODITIES & RARE METALS STATISTICS

The production of statistics pertaining to mineral commodities and rare metals aims to provide statistical information to the public and to policymakers concerning the current use and flow of minerals and rare metals in the Korean economy.
